Family media agreement: how to write one together
Paul Kasten, co-founder of TaskBlue · Updated · 4 min read
A family media agreement is a written agreement between you and your child about when, how long and for what phones, tablets and consoles are used. In Germany, the easiest way is the free generator by klicksafe and Internet-ABC at mediennutzungsvertrag.de: you pick rules together, adjust them and both sign.
What goes in it
A good agreement is short and specific. These points work well:
- Set times without distracting apps, such as homework, meals and bedtime.
- Where the phone stays at night.
- Which apps and games are allowed and who approves new ones.
- How you treat each other, for example in class group chats.
- What happens when a rule is broken.
- What you promise as a parent, such as no phone at meals.
So it doesn't end up in a drawer
Put the agreement up where everyone can see it and look at it again every few months. What doesn't work, you change together. And whatever can be kept automatically shouldn't have to be enforced every day: you can set fixed times in TaskBlue as a weekly schedule, and places like school as location focus.

Both of you sign and put the agreement where you see it every day.
- 5
Adjust it regularly
Look at the agreement again after a few months and adjust it as your child gets older.
Frequently asked
From what age is a media agreement worth it?
As soon as your child uses their own device or goes online regularly. Younger children need only a few simple rules; for teenagers the agreement can leave more room.
Is the agreement legally binding?
No. It's an agreement within the family. Its power comes from the fact that you wrote it together and both signed it.
