Marine Plastic

Plastic waste that reaches oceans, seas, and coastal zones and slowly chokes the life beneath the surface.

Marine plastic is any plastic waste that enters the sea via rivers, wind, ships, or direct discharge. Estimates range from 8 to 12 million tonnes of new input each year. Sun and waves break macroplastic into microplastic that travels up the food chain. The cruelest form is ghost nets: around 50,000 tonnes of lost fishing nets that keep catching every year, long after no one is watching.

In the TaskBlue context

TaskBlue funds the recovery of marine plastic together with WWF Germany and GhostNetZero. Every focus hour brings a piece of it back.
